In 1816, the Terre Haute Land Co. bought a tract of land from the U.S. government where Terre Haute now stands. William Hoggatt, a civil engineer, was employed by the company to lay out a site for a town. When asked why he chose the selection of land where Terre Haute now stands, Hoggatt is reported to have said: " Where I have selected the river runs straight, the land is high, a beautiful place for a town, if built here it will some day become a great city !"...... More than 150 years later, Terre Haute has been called Indiana's best kept secret.
Terre Haute is certainly a progressive city, and is home to one university and four colleges, Indiana State University, Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods College, Indiana Business College, Ivy Tech State College and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology are all located in Terre Haute, with Rose-Hulman one of the top engineering institutions in the United States.
For racing fans, Terre Haute houses a dirt track for hosting sprint and midget car races, which have been covered live nationally on ESPN. There is also the opportunity to shop at Honey Creek Mall, home to more than 80 shops, visiting museums, antique shops, taking a relaxing stroll through one of our many well-kept parks, attending the annual Covered Bridge Festival, trying your luck at one of the city's hot fishing spots, golfing at one of our beautiful golf courses, sampling the delicous food at one of our many fine restaurants including Pepperoni Grill, Garfields and Runyan's Steak House and certainly popular with the ladies are Sycamore Farms and Somewhere in Thyme which are both beautiful decorated tea rooms.
