GREAT LAKES AVIATION TO DISCONTINUE UNITED
EXPRESS FLIGHTS AT ABERDEEN, SOUTH DAKOTA.
Spencer, Iowa -- February 26, 1999 -- Great Lakes Aviation, Ltd. (NASDAQ:GLUX) announced today the termination of its United Express flights at Aberdeen, South Dakota effective April 4, 1999.
Following the discontinuation of United Express Aberdeen flights in May, 1997, Great Lakes Aviation reinstated service between Aberdeen and Denver in December of 1997.
Three daily round trips have been scheduled since the resumption of service. Traffic and revenues generated on the route have not been sufficient to cover the expenses incurred in operating the flights. The last date for United Express flights between Aberdeen and Denver will be April 3, 1999.
"Great Lakes Aviation reinstated flights with the hope that the service would respond to the community's projected needs and provide a reasonable return for the company", said Douglas G. Voss, President and Chief Executive Officer for Great lakes Aviation. He added, "However, after 12 months of service, the revenue has been insufficient to cover the costs resulting in monthly operating losses. Great Lakes is unable to continue to absorb these losses and, therefore, we have made the difficult decision to terminate service. During this year long effort, we have appreciated the Aberdeen community's support and we will continue to look at future opportunities to enhance air service in South Dakota."
Great Lakes Aviation and United Airlines will coordinate the rebooking of passengers who are ticketed for travel April 4, 1999 and later. Refunds without penalty will also be available should alternate arrangements not be satisfactory.
Great Lakes Aviation is currently providing United Express service at 69 airports in thirteen states with a fleet of eight Embraer EMB-120 Brasilias and 40 Beechcraft 1900D regional airliners.
