UNITED AIRLINES ANNOUNCES NEW UNITED EXPRESS MARKETING AGREEMENT WITH
GREAT LAKES AIRLINES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHICAGO, September 6, 1991 -- United Airlines and Great Lakes Airlines today announced their agreement to enter into a United Express relationship.  The two carriers will sign a formal United Express agreement in the near future.

Great Lakes, a privately held regional airline based in Spencer, Iowa, will become the newest regional carrier to offer United Express service, joining United Express partners Air Wisconsin, Mesa Airlines and Westair.

Since initiating scheduled service in 1981, Great Lakes has grown to serve 38 cities in nine states in the upper Midwest.   Last year, the airline carried 166,456 passengers.  Great Lakes operates its flights on new, state-of-the-art 300 mph, pressurize Beech 1900 aircraft seating 19 passenger.

In announcing the agreement, John C. Pope, United vice chairman and chief financial officer, said "Great Lakes' expansive route system throughout the Midwest makes it an ideal partner for United.  This arrangement is beneficial to both companies and should enable Great Lakes as a United Express carrier to expand service to a number of additional small communities.

"We are pleased to bring United Express service to the communities we serve," said Dick Fontaine, Great Lakes president and chief operating officer.  "We are committed to providing high quality service to our customers and becoming a partner in United Express should enable us to accomplish this objective and to expand service to a number of additional communities."

In March 1991, United and Great Lakes signed a marketing agreement that provided for coordinated schedules and joint published fares at five cities.  The new United Express contract will expand key elements of that previous marketing arrangement and introduce new benefits for Great Lakes/ United Express customer.
